Adventures in Artslandia host, Susannah Mars and Artslandia Media Director, Chris Porras will attend the Opening Night of the new Broadway hit Come From Away In New York City March 12th!
Come From Away is set in the town of Gander, Newfoundland in the week following the September 11 attacks, when 38 planes had to unexpectedly land in the small town. The townspeople of Gander housed and fed the thousands of stranded passengers, who nearly doubled the population of the town. Many of the characters in the musical are based on Gander residents or stranded passengers. The show had successful runs at the La Jolla Playhouse, Seattle Repertory Theatre, Ford’s Theatre in Washington, DC and the Royal Alexandra Theatre in Toronto. It is currently in Broadway preview performances at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre and will have its official opening night on March 12, 2017.
The cast includes Tony Award nominee Chad Kimball, as well as Petrina Bromley, Geno Carr, Jenn Colella, Joel Hatch, Kendra Kassebaum, Lee MacDougall, Caesar Samayoa, Q. Smith, Astrid Van Wieren, Sharon Wheatley, Josh Breckenridge, Susan Dunstan, Tamika Lawrence, Tony LePage and Rodney Hicks.
Hicks, is no stranger to Portland audiences and definitely no stranger to Broadway! Hicks made his Broadway debut as part of the original cast of the hit musical RENT. Other Broadway credits include Jesus Christ Superstar and The Scottsboro Boys.
Portland first met Hicks as “Curly” in the first all African American cast of Oklahoma! at Portland Center Stage in 2011. Hicks returned to Portland Center stage as “Curtis” in the groundbreaking musical Dreamgirls in 2014.
