SUMMARY:Shizue: An American Story
DESCRIPTION:Shizue was 19 years old when she came to Hood River\, Oregon as a newlywed with her husband\, Kamegoro\, to make a new life on their orchard. A poet and artist\, Shizue was unprepared for life on the farm\, but she learned—all the while surprising herself with her resilience. \nBut no one in the Japanese American community was prepared when the United States government issued Executive Order 9066 sending all people of Japanese descent to “relocation centers.” Through it all\, Shizue created beauty around her\, writing poetry and creating Ikebana (floral arrangements) with any materials she had on hand. Hers is the true story of a quiet hero\, and her perseverance in the face of tremendous adversity. \nRecommended for students in 4th grade and up\, but easily enjoyed by all ages. \nMore about Portland Opera\nFounded in 1964\, the Portland Opera seeks to gather and inspire audiences\, artists\, and collaborators to create shared opera experiences that enliven and connect us all\, while enhancing the cultural landscape of the beautiful Pacific Northwest.

SUMMARY:Shizue: An American Story
DESCRIPTION:This fall\, Portland Opera is proud to present the next installment of the Our Oregon Project\, Shizue: An American Story\, which illuminates the remarkable life of Shizue Iwatsuki. From a wealthy family trained in the arts of poetry and ikebana\, Shizue married Kamegoro and followed him to his orchard in Hood River\, Oregon. Like thousands of other Japanese Americans\, she experienced both hope and horror in America—from the luscious taste of fresh strawberries from their fields to the injustice in America’s incarceration camps. But through it all\, Shizue rose above and reached beyond\, embodying the concept of gaman\, which means “enduring the seemingly unbearable with patience and dignity.” \nPortland Opera’s Our Oregon project commissions youth operas that highlight the experiences of Oregonians through a variety of lenses. This unique multi-year project began in 2022 with Beatrice: a 50-minute youth opera inspired by the life and story of Beatrice\, Morrow Cannady\, and it will continue in future seasons with operas about Latinx and Native American Oregonian heroes. After the world premiere\, this show embarks on a two-month\, multi-city tour.
