SUMMARY:Spring: Vivaldi\, Guido & Samuel
DESCRIPTION:A celebration of rebirth and renewal\, from the much-loved “Spring” from Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons\, to the world premiere of Rhian Samuel’s Gwanwyn (the Welsh word for spring)\, commissioned by PBO in response to Vivaldi’s interpretation of the season. We also explore Bach’s Harpsichord Concerto in G Minor\, a ‘rebirth’ of one of his earlier works where the organic interplay of soloist and orchestra captures the nature of springtime.

SUMMARY:Resonance Nova: Music as Catalyst for Change
DESCRIPTION:The Orchesrta Nova Northwest launches a new collaboration with the brilliant and dynamic Resonance Ensemble\, a professional vocal ensemble with a mission that mirrors that of the Orchesrta Nova Northwest\, who is committed to creating and presenting powerful programs promoting meaningful social change. This program will present an evocative work by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Caroline Shaw that uses excerpts of American poet Emma Lazarus’ poem The New Colossus and also addresses refugee crises\, and a rarely performed work of American composer Margaret Bonds that sets W.E.B. Du Bois’ stirring Credo from his 1920 autobiography\, Darkwater: Voices from within the Veil. The combined choruses from Lewis and Clark and Reed Colleges will join the Resonance Ensemble and the ONN for the mighty and majestic Dona nobis pacem of English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams\, a work composed in 1936 and written as a plea for peace between the two world wars.

SUMMARY:Schumann 4: From Sorrow to Ecstasy
DESCRIPTION:A work of searing drama and intensity\, Schumann’s Fourth Symphony charts an emotional journey to rapturous joy in one uninterrupted flow of achingly romantic music. Plus\, Jeffrey Kahane mixes operatic lyricism with the playful intimacy of chamber music in Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 22\, a work that “flows from Kahane’s hands as refreshingly as water from a crystalline spring” (LA Times). \nPreview the Magazine >>

SUMMARY:Minidoka Swing Band
DESCRIPTION:Imagine yourself as a young adult born in America\, knowing only the U.S. as your home. Now\, picture the country of your birth rounding up you and your family to be imprisoned because your ancestors legally immigrated from a country currently at war with the U.S. How would you deal with this upheaval in your life? \nThe Minidoka Swing Band dives into this topic\, taking you on a journey detailing the experiences of the Japanese Americans during World War 2 as they were forced into internment camps in the U.S. Seeking to create as normal a life as possible\, people in the camps formed sports teams\, Boy Scout troops\, and often held Saturday night dances for young adults and teens\, with music by bands formed in the camps. \nThe Minidoka Swing Band performs swing tunes from the Big Band era—music of the 1930s and 1940s popular in the internment camps of WW2—paying tribute to the resilience of the Americans unjustly imprisoned by the only country they ever knew. This evening will also include a presentation about these troubling events from United States history. \nThis performance\, supported by a City of Hillsboro Performance Series Grant\, directly supports the Minidoka Swing Band\, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting The Immigrant Story.

SUMMARY:Pergolesi: Stabat Mater
DESCRIPTION:The season of seasons closes by honoring the themes of light\, love\, and rebirth through acclaimed works by Pergolesi\, Scarlatti\, Bach\, and Vivaldi. In Vivaldi’s “Summer\,” the cuckoo\, dove\, and goldfinch sing in the blazing sun before the winds begin to blow. Following an homage to Scarlatti\, including his Salve Regina in G Minor\, we conclude with a work that he inspired; Pergolessi’s final masterpiece\, Stabat Mater. Its dancing rhythms and decorative trills contrast effectively with the tender\, passionate text sung by soprano Anna Dennis\, rounding out the season with a sense of joy and hope.

SUMMARY:The Search for Beauty
DESCRIPTION:Get ready to dive into the intense emotions of Robert Schumann’s Manfred Overture. Based on a poem by Lord Byron\, you’ll feel the great suffering from supernatural forces that he detailed in his dramatic 1817 work. \nThen\, experience the resilience in Ruth Gipps’s Second Symphony\, written during WWII. Reflecting its time\, this symphony is like a musical journey from struggle to triumph that leaves you feeling hopeful and strong. \nValerie Coleman’s Tracing Visions is powerful and thought-provoking\, addressing the ugliness of hatred of apathy and violence and means to reinforce the profound truth that we are all one people and should strive to create a safe and compassionate world. \nFinally\, Dmitri Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto No. 2 feels like a burst of sunshine with its cheerful melodies\, like the light at the end of the tunnel after so much grief. \nIt is a program to inspire—to move and encourage us all to continue in our search for beauty and hope.
