DESCRIPTION:Constant State of Otherness is a multi-layered performance exploring the impacts of the universal experiences of othering and alienation. Through taiko\, Japanese folk dance\, song\, and personal story\, six performers guide the audience through a four-part journey inspired by experiences of isolation and displacement that come from not having an easy sense of home. \nRooted in ancestral wisdom and survival\, Constant State of Otherness resists simplistic translations of language\, cultural ways\, and the complicated emotions that otherness evokes. By allowing their stories to fractally unfold through the resonance of drum\, voice\, and movement\, Unit Souzou offers an invitation to locate our shared longing to belong.

A call-and-response session between the artists on stage\, this evening showcases South Indian rhythms made by the nattuvangam (cymbals)\, mridangams (double-sided drums)\, and konnakkol (recitation of rhythmic syllables). \nSway\, move\, and groove to the rhythm made by instruments with an ancient history\, and participate in an interactive audience session to create rhythms with the musicians. All are welcome to enjoy and have fun with the beats and to take your knowledge of rhythm and South Indian music to a new level. \nThis performance is a collaboration between Sarada Kala Nilayam\, a Portland dance school\, and Sankara Drumming Group\, a South Indian Classical percussion school. \nSupported by a City of Hillsboro Performance Series Grant\, this performance directly supports Sarada Kala Nilayam\, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting The Young Artist’s Club.

Boka Marimba brings the energetic dance music of Zimbabwe and southern Africa to the Walters stage with a show that is a feast for both the eyes and ears as the musicians move with lightning speed and agility. You’ll have trouble sitting still when the Zimbabwean-style marimbas combine with drums and vocals for an irresistible groove. \nExperience the sound of seven marimbas\, gourd shakers called hosho\, mbira (“thumb piano”)\, and drums\, along with songs sung in the Shona language and filled with melodic themes and variations layered in polyrhythmic\, cyclic patterns.
